In CK3 someone made a Bronze Age start, and that's equally viable - requiring approximation but also yielding to it gracefully - as most realms on the map. Back in 769 some guy made a 633 start ('Rise of Islam'), which was great to play. As long as there is a vague element of dynastic hereditary and a ladder of tiers of authority, it's fine. Of course, the feudal government is an approximation in this case, but frankly, 769 Francia is less approximated than e.g. The beauty of 769 is that it's about as viable as 867, and it still has the atmosphere of (very) Late Antiquity. One doesn't really need to do much with the game for a 769 start other than porting history files from CK2, which of course requires some selection, curation, and some filling of gaps with one's own research for new parts of the map or provinces that weren't in. If you are after the experience of 769 alone, mods can help you with that. Playing in Abyssinia, Nubia or India or in/near the Western Protectorate in the 8th century was freaking epic.
The favourite if playing outside Europe, in Iberia or British Isles.
